English Bulldogs have been around since the Magna Carta was signed by King John of England. The Bulldog can trace its history all the way back to 13th century England. These guys sure have been around for a long time. The bully was bred for a popular sport called bullbaiting. No, they didn’t use our lovable bullies as bait. What they did was they would tie a real bull to a stake. Then they would unleash the English bullies. These dogs were trained to attack and kill the bull. Wow, sounds like fun…I guess if you were living back in the Dark Ages it was a hoot. Just goes to show you how low people will go for entertainment if you take away their I-Pods and big screen TVs. I almost forgot to mention another important fact. Do you know why English Bulldogs have all those cute wrinkles? Well, the wrinkles were bred into the bully so when they were unleashed during bullbaiting the blood would easily run down their face and not block the bully’s view of its prey. It’s kind of ironic that something that makes the English Bulldog such a handsome breed actually served a deadly purpose. Needless to say the English made bullbaiting illegal 1835. This forced the common man to come up with new ways of entertainment. Maybe that’s when they invented cricket? We all know that America’s Pastime Major League Baseball came from cricket. There you have it, the English Bulldog helped topple the monarchy in England and maybe responsible for the invention of baseball. And you dared to think that bullies haven’t made any important historical contributions.
